Online monitoring of product-relevant parameters in the production of polyols
Polyols play a crucial role in the production of polyurethanes by reacting with isocyanates to control the properties of the end product. These versatile molecules are instrumental in the creation of durable, specialized materials that are used in a variety of industries - from foams to adhesives to elastomers.
The production of polyols with specific properties is technically demanding and requires a high degree of precision. Even the smallest fluctuations in the process, for example due to measuring device failures or deposits in pipelines, can affect the molecular structure of the polyol and lead to deviations in the end product.
The use of an NIR measuring system for inline monitoring of chemical processes enables the precise measurement of liquid composition and quality directly in the process flow. This improves productivity, consistency and quality, reduces chemical consumption and laboratory time and leads to optimized process control, greater safety, lower operating costs and prevents production downtime.
A key element for safe and reliable measurements is the use of the Hellma process probe “Excalibur HD FPT”. Thanks to its special design, it is maintenance-free, temperature-resistant up to 400°C and offers maximum long-term reliability under extreme conditions. The guaranteed high reproducibility of the measurements also ensures that the polyols with precisely defined properties (e.g. viscosity, hydroxyl number, molecular weight) are maintained in every batch. By evaluating the spectra recorded during the process, deviations can be detected directly and the process can be optimally controlled.
