Toluene liquid filter for checking spectral resolution

The liquid filter toluene in hexane (UV6) with reference filter hexane (UV9) shows in its spectrum in the range between 265 - 270 nm one distinctive feature, with which the spectral resolution resp. the actual slit width of a spectrophotometer can be determined according to the regulations of the European Pharmacopoeia and the U.S. Pharmacopeia.

Typical spectrum of the toluene liquid filter, measured with different slit widths

The spectral resolution is measured against the reference filter 667-UV9 hexane supplied with each filter set. The measurement is the same for all bandwidths. The wavelength range from 265 nm to 270 nm is scanned and the peak maximum and peak minimum are determined. Then the ratio between these two values is calculated.
